What Qualifications Do M&E Contractors Have?

Whether you run a commercial building or own a home, you are likely to need to call out a mechanical and electric (M&E) contractor at some point. These services are the ones you use to maintain and manage mechanical and electrical systems in your building, such as heating, air conditioning, ventilation and plumbing.

Of course, when allowing a new M&E contractor into your home or commercial property, you want to be confident that they will do a good job and have the relevant qualifications to comply with regulations.

At DMA Property Solutions, we are highly qualified M&E contractors with all the required and necessary accreditations in the industry, demonstrating our commitment to reliable and compliant services, as well as our commitment to sustainability.

In this blog, we run through the different accreditations you should look out for, why you should look out for them and which ones we have.

Essential Qualifications & Certifications for M&E Contractors

There are several essential qualifications that M&E contractors should have.

National Association of Professional Inspectors & Testers (NAPIT)

Being a member of the NAPIT demonstrates the company's competence in their work and that they have the relevant insurance in place as well as compliant processes and procedures.

When you employ a NAPIT-qualified M&E contractor, you can be confident that they will do the job safely and legally. This means their work sits within health and safety regulations too.

As the responsibility of compliant and safe work lies with the installer, you should know that they will ensure their work meets regulations.

Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is specifically for the installation and maintenance of renewable energy installations, such as solar panels.

This isn’t a mandatory or legal requirement. However, it is a highly regarded certification scheme in the industry.

Why? Because it shows a company's commitment to quality designs and installations.

The MCS sets standards for work around these renewable energy solutions, which registered organisations must adhere to.

While this isn’t a legally required certification for M&E contractors, we recommend finding a company that holds it because it shows they will have high-quality equipment in their installations and that their work will meet the highest industry standards, so you will have an energy-efficient and high-functioning system – that's less likely to go wrong.

Gas Safe Registration

Plumbers and anyone working with gas appliances such as boilers and heating systems are legally required to be Gas Safe Registered.

Similar to the above qualifications and registrations, a Gas Safe Registration shows the competence and safety of the contractor working on your property.

As you will know, gas can be incredibly dangerous, especially when mishandled, which is why it is so important that the person completing any work knows what they are doing.

City & Guilds Certifications

City & Guilds offer comprehensive training programmes to ensure those working with mechanical and electrical systems are highly skilled and up-to-date with techniques, tools and processes in their work.

This is also not a legal requirement, but it is an industry-recognised set of qualifications that you should look out for.

Having this marker against a business's name demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and staying up to date within their industry. So, you can be confident their work will meet current standards and regulations and will employ new technology and techniques for efficient work and performance.

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)

A dedicated construction certification scheme, the Construction Skills Certification Scheme CSCS, means M&E contractors can provide proof of their skillset, knowledge and qualifications.

The scheme doesn’t provide training but provides relevant cards for contractors proving they have the required skills and accreditations to be compliant for the project.

Ensuring the M&E contractor you employ holds one of these cards means you can rest assured that they know what they are doing and their work will meet industry and health and safety standards.

F-Gas Certification

The F-Gas Certification is needed when dealing with refrigeration or air conditioning. These systems utilise F-gases, which are powerful greenhouse gases that can cause damage to the atmosphere when not handled properly. This is why it is vital that your M&E contractor holds an F-Gas Certification.

This accreditation shows knowledge and training to comply with government legislation and laws with minimum hassle.

Like all the above qualifications, this certification means the M&E contractor will safely handle any F-gases in your system, and their work will meet standards and regulations.

Why These Certifications Matter

These qualifications are important for several reasons:

  • Safety and compliance - they ensure the work adheres to legal and industry standards.
  • Quality assurance - they reduce risks and offer guarantees of a high level of workmanship.
  • Customer confidence - you can trust that the contractors are qualified and know what they are doing no matter what the task at hand is.
